This includes paints, polishes, stains and oils. For outdoor uses such as patios and decking, spotted gum timber is best treated with a decking oil, as this can prevent moisture absorption, swelling, warping and splitting. 

This will depend on how you want your timber to look. For a more worn-in finish it is best to leave the timber exposed to the elements for a few weeks. will also allow any excess tannins and natural oils to be released. Once it has reached a level of weathering you are happy with, you can wash and dry the timber before applying an oil of your choice. 

If you prefer a richer, fresher finish, it is best to coat and oil before or immediately after installation. 

Spotted Gum timber features a spectrum of colours, ranging from pale greys off-white to rich, dark browns. The heartwood of Spotted Gum tends to be darker brows, whereas the sapwood is whiter. These colours can be further enhanced with oils and stains.
